MCT Challenge Fund for Montessori Nursery Schools in Tanzania

The MCT Challenge Fund gives dedicated Montessori teachers and architects in Tanzania the necessary means to create new inspiring nursery schools based on Montessori Architecture and to provide equal access to child-centred education in their communities.

Each school provides child-centred learning spaces for 70–80 children, costs CHF 50,000, and can be expanded into a pre-primary and primary school over time. The buildings and outdoor areas are designed by experienced local architects, made with regional materials, and follow the 28 patterns of Montessori Architecture—a research-based design methodology grounded in Montessori education.

The participating teachers contribute a plot of land and 10% of the construction costs. Co-ownership of each facility is held by the teachers’ association, the Montessori Community of Tanzania (MCT), which is also responsible for the quality of construction and operations. As a result, inspiring learning spaces are created that not only promote independent learning but also strengthen local employment, a sense of ownership, and community spirit

Following the successful implementation of ten pilot projects in various regions of Tanzania, MCT and the Arthur Waser Foundation are now inviting individuals and organisations to support the vision of equitable access to child-centred education—either by financing one or more Montessori nursery schools or by making a general contribution to the Challenge Fund. Our goal is to secure 100 commitments for new Montessori nursery schools by 2026.
